EdSource team wins Visual Storytelling award from EWA for “Tainted Taps”

Earlier this month at the Education Writers Association (EWA) national seminar in Baltimore, the data and interactives team at EdSource – Daniel J. Willis, Yuxuan “Sunny” Xie, and myself – was honored with the Best Visual Storytelling Award for a small newsroom for last year’s Tainted Taps report on alarming lead levels in the drinking water at California’s public schools.

We had previously been named finalists long with The Hechinger Report and Idaho Education News. More detail about the project here.

The same award for larger newsrooms went to an outstanding project by Vox’s Alvin Chang mapping school district borders to how their role in perpetuating school segregation.
